IAEE 2023 opening session tackles clean, sustainable energy

RIYADH - The first-ever International Association of Energy Economics conference held in the Middle East and North Africa region opened on Sunday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia with a discussion on the pathways to a sustainable energy future.

Fahad Alajlan, president of King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC), and Majid AI-Moneef, chairman of the Board of Saudi Association for Energy Economics, gave welcome speeches as co-organizers at the opening plenary session of the conference, which runs until Feb 9.

Jean-Michel Glachant, IAEE president, also addressed the session with optimism for global energy prospects in 2023.

The panel session that followed immediately discussed means to create energy for all in a time of volatility and energy security concerns, particularly in rural and developing regions, which can become key to solving the world’s problems, including economic growth, quality of life, inequality, social stability, and environmental needs.

This session explored challenges, gaps, and ways to enable just and inclusive energy transition and regional energy integration.

Over 500 government officials, institutional and corporate leaders, and renowned academics from about 40 countries are attending the conference.
