Bangkok lights up Chinatown to celebrate Year of the Rabbit

Bangkok – Bangkok's Chinatown turned brighter, colorful and festive on Monday evening following the New Year Light-up Ceremony at the Royal Jubilee Gate, marking a start of the city’s celebrations for Chinese Lunar New Year.

Attending the lighting ceremony were Thai Minister of Tourism and Sports Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand Yuthasak Supasorn, and Charge d'affaires of the Embassy of China in the Kingdom of Thailand Yang Xin. 

Jan 22 marks the beginning of 2023 Chinese New Year of the Rabbit, which is celebrated in Thailand mostly by the Thai-Chinese communities. The exhibitions will last till Feb 15. Other traditional activities for celebration include lion and dragon dances and fireworks.

Phiphat told reporters that Spring Festival, the start of the Chinese New Year, has been one of the key cultural links for century-long friendship of Thailand and China.

Yang said that the Thai efforts in holding the first large-scale physical celebrations for the Chinese New Year carry significance for mutual sharing of festive happiness and prosperity.
