HK sees 5,951 new COVID-19 infections, 13 deaths

HONG KONG – Hong Kong recorded 5,951 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday while 13 more patients passed away, bringing the city’s toll during the pandemic to 10,549.

The new cases comprised 5,431 local infections and 520 imported cases, the Centre for Health Protection said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon. Hong Kong reported 6,014 new cases on Monday.

The CHP said 10 residential care homes for the elderly and persons with disabilities had 12 new cases while 683 schools reported 1,068 students and 213 staff members getting infected.

As of Tuesday, the Public Health Laboratory Services Branch had identified 221 cases of sub-lineage XBB, six of XBD, eight of BA.2.75.2, seven of BA.4.6, 12 of BF.7 and 34 of BQ.1.1 among imported cases.

There were also 33 cases of sub-lineage XBB, 15 of XBD, one of BA.2.75.2, one of BF.7 and 35 of BQ.1.1 that had been found among local infections.

The CHP added that 86.4 percent of new cases verified from Nov 6 to 12 were linked to the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron subvariants.

In a separate statement, the Hospital Authority said 2,194 infected patients were being treated public hospitals, including 316 new patients.

The HA said 190 patients required oxygen therapy and 13 patients needed ventilator support. Forty patients were in critical condition, including nine in intensive care, while 45 were in serious condition, the HA added.
