President Xi Jinping underlined on Monday the joint responsibility between him and US President Joe Biden in anchoring the future direction of bilateral relations and bringing ties on an upward track.

Xi made the remarks as he met with Biden on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Bali, their first face-to-face meeting since Biden took office in January 2021.

Xi said the current situation in China-US relations does not fit into the fundamental interests of the two nations and their people, nor does it meet the expectations from the international community

"I look forward to working together with you, Mr President, in bringing China-US relations back to a track of healthy and stable development, ushering more benefits to our two nations and the world," Xi said.

Xi added the current situation in China-US relations does not fit into the fundamental interests of the two nations and their people, nor does it meet the expectations from the international community.

"Statesmen should think about and make clear the direction of development of their own nations as well as ways of getting along with other nations and the world," he said, adding it is the common expectation of the international community for Beijing and Washington to properly handle their relations.

Xi said that the two countries should take history as a mirror and let it guide the future.

As leaders of two major countries, they need to chart the right course and find the right direction for bilateral ties and elevate the relationship, Xi said.

He added that though the two leaders have remained in communication via video-conferences, phone calls and letters, none of them can really substitute face-to-face exchanges.

Xi said the world expects that the two countries will properly handle their relationship.

In this time and age, great changes are unfolding in ways like never before, Xi emphasized, saying that humanity is confronted with unprecedented challenges and the world has come to a crossroads.

Noting that the meeting has attracted the world's attention, Xi added where to go from here is a question that is not just on their mind, but also on the mind of all countries.

He said that China and the United States need to work with all countries to bring more hope to world peace, greater confidence in global stability and stronger impetus to common development.

Xi said that he is ready to have a candid and in-depth exchange of views with Biden on issues of strategic importance in China-US relations and on major global and regional issues.

Xi added that he also looks forward to working with Biden to bring China-US relations back to the track of healthy and stable growth to the benefit of the two countries and the whole world.

China and the United States are two major countries with different histories, cultures, social systems and development paths, and there have been and will continue to be differences between the two countries, Xi said.

However, such differences should not become an obstacle to growing China-US relations, he added.

Xi said the Taiwan question is at the very core of China's core interests, the bedrock of the political foundation of China-US relations, and the first red line that must not be crossed in China-US relations.

Observing the basic norms of international relations and the three China-US joint communiques is the most important guardrail and safety net for China-US relations, Xi added.
