Five contractor workers were arrested on Friday on charges stemming from the accident in July that injured two dancers, one seriously, at the Hong Kong Coliseum during a concert.

Police say they believe that the Engineering Impact Ltd made false declarations on the weight of major engineering components in order to get the performance permit from the government as soon as possible

The suspects — four men and a woman, aged 40 to 63 — include the business director, project manager and technician coordinator of Engineering Impact Ltd, the main contractor of the concert, and a senior technician from Hip Hing Loong Stage Engineering Co, the stage engineering subcontractor.

The four workers from Engineering Impact were arrested on suspicion of fraud and allowing objects to fall from height. The fifth worker is accused of allowing objects to fall from height.

On July 28, a giant LED screen fell onto the stage during a concert by the boy band Mirror, injuring two dancers. One is still hospitalized.

Speaking at a news conference on Friday, Alan Chung, a superintendent of the Crime Kowloon West Headquarters, said that the two companies failed to take any measures to ensure the secure and safe use of mechanical parts of the concert engineering project.

Police say they believe that the Engineering Impact Ltd made false declarations on the weight of major engineering components in order to get the performance permit from the government as soon as possible.

Showing pictures to reporters, Chung said the LED screen that fell at the concert weighed 9,852 pounds (4.47 metric tons), but the contractors had claimed that its weight was just over 3,000 pounds.

After the accident, the government formed a task force to investigate the case, led by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. In August, it found that metal fatigue had caused the snapping of wire rope of the LED screen. The government will brief the media about the investigation result at 5:45 pm today.

The concert’s organizer, MakerVille, also invited third party expertise to facilitate the investigation. It will also brief the public on the issue following the government news conference.
