Cano equals Neymar record as Fluminense beat Goias

RIO DE JANEIRO - Argentine striker German Cano equalled the record for the most goals in a single Brazilian domestic season as Fluminense cruised to a 3-0 home win over Goias in Brazil's Serie A championship on Wednesday.

After a goalless first half, the visitors were reduced to 10 men in the 51st minute when Dada Belmonte was shown a second yellow card for a bad foul. Cano put his team ahead in the 78th minute by heading home after a Matheus Martins cross.

Goias' fortunes deteriorated when Felipe Bastos was also sent off for a rash challenge three minutes from time that earned him a straight red card.

Alan doubled the lead as he connected with Michel Araujo's cross with a close-range finish and Michel Araujo completed the rout in stoppage time by tapping home after another Martins pass.

Cano has now scored 43 goals in 68 appearances across all competitions in 2022, drawing level with Neymar and Gabriel Barbosa as the highest scorers in a single season.

The result at the Maracana stadium left Fluminense third in the 20-team standings, 14 points behind leaders Palmeiras with one match remaining.
