BEIJING – The United States should stop trying to deal with China from a position of strength and stop trying to suppress and contain China's development, said the Chinese foreign minister.

Wang Yi made the statement when he met with US Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns on Friday.

Chinese state councilor, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, Wang briefed Burns on the major achievements and significance of the just-concluded 20th CPC National Congress.

Noting that China-US relations are at a critical juncture, he said Chinese President Xi Jinping has pointed out that China and the US should respect each other, coexist peacefully and forge win-win cooperation.

This is the fundamental principle for the two countries to develop their relations, he added.

Neither China nor the US can change the other, Wang said, adding that Washington should stop trying to deal with Beijing from a position of strength and to suppress and contain China's development.
