HONG KONG - The Office of the Commissioner of the Chinese Foreign Ministry in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on Wednesday strongly disapproved of and firmly rejected some US politicians' baseless accusation of a Hong Kong court's law-based trial for Jimmy Lai Chee-ying on fraud charges.

"They openly spoke up for the anti-China element and vilified the rule of law in the HKSAR," a spokesperson for the office said, urging the relevant politicians to respect laws and facts, recognize the historical trend, and immediately stop their political stunts that trample on the rule of law.

Hong Kong judicial authorities performed their statutory duties by trying the case in strict accordance with the law and legal procedures, which safeguarded Hong Kong's rule of law and justice, and brooked no slander, the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said that in the past 25 years since Hong Kong's return to the motherland, the principles of "one country, two systems," "Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong" and "Hong Kong enjoying a high degree of autonomy" have been earnestly implemented, Hong Kong's legal index has ranked high globally, and the lawful rights and freedoms of Hong Kong residents have been fully protected.

Under the national security law in Hong Kong and the new electoral system, Hong Kong's legal order has been restored, legal principles upheld, and its development put back on track, the spokesperson said.

However, some US politicians ignored Hong Kong's mainstream public opinion and Hong Kong's legal achievements, proclaiming to "stand with Hong Kong people," but in fact sided with anti-China forces in Hong Kong, which laid bare their intention to undermine Hong Kong's prosperity and stability in the guise of the rule of law, the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson stressed that no interference can shake the foundation of Hong Kong's rule of law, nor can it weaken China's determination to firmly uphold the "one country, two systems" principle or stop the historical trend of Hong Kong moving to greater prosperity and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

The spokesperson urged the US politicians to recognize the reality, put themselves in the right position, refrain from interfering in Hong Kong affairs, and immediately stop their political stunts.
