CDHK stands with city to counter foreign propaganda
By China Daily

Editor’s note: As China Daily Hong Kong Edition celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, we have invited leaders from various sectors who have deep bonds with us to join us in our celebrations. Let’s read what they say, as well as their messages of congratulations and best wishes for CDHK’s future.

Although anniversaries are often milestones, a 25th anniversary has a particular resonance. Whereas China Daily was inaugurated in 1981, its Hong Kong subsidiary followed in 1997, when the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region was established. Ever since, China Daily Hong Kong (CDHK) has chronicled the city’s progress, while also providing rich perspectives on national and global affairs.

It is no exaggeration to say that CDHK has forged a unique role for itself, and this has benefited Hong Kong. After 1997, China’s antagonists peddled false narratives about the city, and rebuttals were necessary. In good times and bad, CDHK has stood with Hong Kong and countered foreign propaganda, and its staff have risen admirably to every challenge.

Although Hong Kong has faced turbulent times, including an insurrection in 2019-20, it has not only survived but emerged stronger. Throughout, CDHK has ensured the city’s story was honestly told, while also enlightening the public and setting the record straight.

As a campaigner for criminal justice and political integrity, I was happy to have been invited to share my thoughts with CDHK’s readers in 2018, and a dynamic partnership emerged. This was invaluable when sustained attempts were made to destroy the “one country, two systems” policy in 2019, and people of goodwill rallied round to protect Hong Kong. Apart from providing a focal point for everybody who cherishes Hong Kong, CDHK also encouraged its guardians, notably the law enforcement agencies.

Everybody associated with CDHK appreciates its journalistic prowess and the professionalism of its staff, who are always willing to go the extra mile. Its comprehensive coverage of events, including business, culture and sport, has been illuminating, while its extracurricular activities, ranging from writing competitions to cultural forums, have benefited many.

I am delighted to congratulate CDHK on its 25th anniversary, and to wish it every success for the future.
