HK logs 8,278 new COVID-19 cases, 16 more deaths

HONG KONG - Hong Kong reported 8,278 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday while 16 more patients passed away, bringing the city’s toll during the fifth wave to 9,655.

Albert Au Ka-wing, principal medical and health officer of the Centre for Health Protection’s communicable disease branch, said in a press briefing that there were 8,149 local cases and 129 imported infections.

Of the 129 imported cases, 52 were detected at the airport, 27 at the quarantine hotels and 40 in the community. Twenty came from the United States and18 from the Philippines. The others were from 32 other countries.

Cases linked to the Omicron subvariant BA.5 had risen to 75.8 percent of new infections, he added. 

Au said three residential care homes reported a total of four confirmed cases. A total of 10 residents who were classified as close contacts will be put under quarantine.

He said the daily caseload of local infections has been fewer than 9,000 over the past week as the pandemic shows signs of stabilizing. He added that the authorities will continue to monitor the pandemic situation to better grasp the latest situation and trends.

Sara Ho, Chief Manager (Patient Safety and Risk Management) of the Hospital Authority, said in the same briefing that the 16 COVID patients who passed away included nine men and seven women aged 4 to 98. Ten were not fully vaccinated.

She also said that 2,690 COVID patients were being treated in hospitals as of Saturday, including 292 new patients. Fifty-six were in critical condition, including 16 receiving intensive care, while 54 were in serious condition.
