The National Climate Center said on Wednesday that the intensity of China's regional high temperatures is now the highest on record.

Temperature intensity is determined by the average national temperature, its range of influence and its duration, the center said.

The National Climate Center reported that the coverage area of temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius from June 13 to Aug 15 is now the largest in history

Data collected by the center since June 13 showed that by Monday, China had seen 64 days of regional heatwaves, topping the previous record of 62 days in 2013 and becoming the longest period of high heat since China began collecting its weather data in 1961.

The center reported that the coverage area of temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius during that period is now the largest in history.

From June 1 to Aug 15, the average number of days with the highest temperature reaching or exceeding 35 C on the day in China reached 12 days, a record high since 1961 and 5.1 days more than that in the same period of regular years.

Some regions, including northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, saw over 30 days of high temperatures.

The highest temperature recorded in the nation was 44.5 C in Chongqing.
