Hong Kong political heavyweights on Tuesday said US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan is “playing with fire” and a blatant provocation to the one-China policy.

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan is gross interference in China’s internal affairs, which seriously undermines China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, wantonly tramples on the one-China policy, and undermines Sino-US relations, said former World Health Organization director-general Margaret Chan Fung Fu-chun

Former World Health Organization director-general Margaret Chan Fung Fu-chun, a member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, said the one-China policy is a recognized basic norm for international relations and also the political basis and bottom line in China’s diplomacy.

Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan is gross interference in China’s internal affairs, which seriously undermines China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, wantonly tramples on the one-China policy, and undermines Sino-US relations, Chan said.

Stressing the clear position and great concerns of the central government on the Taiwan question, Chan urges relevant parties to recognize the important sensitivity of the issue and to stop meddling in China’s internal affairs.

Tam Yiu-chung, a Hong Kong delegate to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress — the nation’s top legislature — said Pelosi’s visit is a blatant provocation that challenges China’s bottom line.

The visit shows that the US has overtly ignored the serious concern and firm opposition that the central government has repeatedly made clear regarding Taiwan-related matters, Tam said.

Noting that the US has unilaterally violated the one-China policy and the three Sino-US joint communiques, Tam expressed support for the central government to take firm measures to safeguard the nation’s territorial sovereignty.

In a statement, the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, the city’s largest political party, said Pelosi’s visit has violated China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, which has “sent a wrong message” to separatist forces in Taiwan.

The DAB fully supports the central government’s taking all necessary countermeasures against Pelosi’s wrongdoing, warning that the US shall bear all consequences arising therefrom.

In a separate statement, the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions slammed Pelosi’s visit, saying that the visit has deliberately provoked the escalation of Taiwan's separatist activities, and undermined peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.

The union will resolutely defend China's national sovereignty and territorial integrity, oppose any act that aims to split the country, and firmly support the central government in promoting the peaceful reunification of the motherland, the statement reads.
