Lee is HK's sixth-term chief executive-elect

HONG KONG - John Lee Ka-chiu won the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s chief executive election on Sunday, becoming the sixth-term chief executive-elect after securing 1,416 votes from Election Committee members.

Election Committee members cast their ballots between 9 am and 11:30 am on Sunday morning at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai.

This is the first chief executive election since the improvement of the city's electoral system.

2:51 pm    Election held 'smoothly'

Barnabas Fung Wah, chairman of the Electoral Affairs Commission, said the polling and counting processes of the sixth-term chief executive election went very smoothly.

"The election was conducted in an open, just and honest manner. The Electoral Affairs Commission is satisfied with the arrangements," Fung said.

12:40 pm    John Lee thanks electors

John Lee Ka-chiu made a short speech after the announcement of the election results, expressing gratitude to members of the Election Committee who turned out to vote and to the Hong Kong residents.

12:36 pm    CE congratulates Lee on election

Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor extended sincere congratulations to Lee on his successful election and said she would submit a report of the election result to the central government.

12:30 pm    John Lee wins CE race

Returning Officer Keith Yeung Kar-hung announced that John Lee Ka-chiu received 1,416 votes from Election Committee members, surpassing the threshold of 750 votes to win the election.

11:51 am    Final voter turnout at 97.74%

The Electoral Affairs Commission announced that the final voter turnout for the sixth-term chief executive election is 97.74 percent.

11:30 am        Polling closes

Polling for Hong Kong's sixth-term chief executive election closes.

11:09 am       96.24% voter turnout

As of 11 am, 1,406 Election Committee members had cast their votes in the 2022 Chief Executive Election, representing a voter turnout rate of 96.24 percent, according to the Electoral Affairs Commission.

10:58 am        Security chief inspects polling station

Secretary for Security Chris Tang Ping-keung inspected the security arrangements at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre to ensure the chief executive election is conducted in a safe and orderly manner. He also met the officers of the disciplined service on duty nearby and gave them words of encouragement.

10:39 am       77.96% voter turnout

As of 10:30 am, 1,139 Election Committee members had cast their votes in the 2022 Chief Executive Election, representing a voter turnout rate of 77.96 percent, according to the Electoral Affairs Commission.

10:32 am    Public area full

The Electoral Affairs Commission urged members of the public not to go to the central counting station cum media center of the 2022 Chief Executive Election at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai, as the public area has reached full capacity. 

10:10 am    59.62% voter turnout

As of 10 am, 871 Election Committee members had cast their votes in the 2022 Chief Executive Election, representing a voter turnout rate of 59.62 percent, according to the Electoral Affairs Commission.

9:40 am    Security beefed up

9:30 am    34.43% voter turnout

As of 9:30 am, 503 Election Committee members had cast their votes in the chief executive election, representing a voter turnout rate of 34.43 percent, according to the Electoral Affairs Commission.
