Young Hong Kong entrepreneur Calvin Tse Hoi-fat told the international community on Tuesday that the National Security Law for Hong Kong has ensured stability in the city and restored hope that young people can enjoy a bright future.

Speaking at a session of the United Nations Human Rights Council by video link, Tse said young entrepreneurs like himself need a stable and safe environment to seek personal and business development. That is exactly what the national security law has brought back to Hong Kong, which was rocked by violent social unrest in 2019, Tse said.

The chairperson of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Young Entrepreneurs made his speech from the perspective of local young people and entrepreneurs. He shared his views about the reason for the law’s promulgation and what has been achieved since it came into effect on June 30, 2020.

He recalled that in 2019, before the enforcement of the national security law, Hong Kong had changed from being one of the safest cities in the world to a place full of violence.

Many of Tse’s business chamber colleagues had confided in him that they did not dare walk on the streets or express their thoughts during that time. Some members’ businesses were savagely attacked either physically or online because they held a different view from the protesters, or simply because they remained neutral.

In his video speech, Tse cited a survey conducted by a local research institute last year, which found that over 75 percent of the respondents were satisfied with the effectiveness of the implementation of the  national security law.

Tse also urged US politicians, who have been trying to vilify the national security law, to stop interfering. “I believe this is not only my wish but also the wish of the peoples of the world,” he said.
