Shenzhen firms donate to Hong Kong's fight against COVID-19

SHENZHEN – Many companies in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen have rushed to make donations to help Hong Kong battle its fifth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic

Shenzhen-based technology company Tencent Holdings contributed HK$10 million ($1.28 million) donations through the Tencent Foundation.

The fund will be used to purchase nucleic test reagents and medicine for Hong Kong youth, and pandemic-prevention supplies for nursing homes and medical institutions.

The company also organized a volunteer team to distribute the supplies.

Shenzhen YHLO Biotech Co Ltd donated 150,000 test kits, which its employees produced by working extra hours in the last several days. The kits were delivered to Hong Kong this week.

The company said its self-testing kits are simple to use, and it takes only 15 minutes to obtain the results. The company will prioritize supplies for Hong Kong and contribute more in order to meet the city’s demand, said an executive.

Yaneng Bioscience (Shenzhen) Co Ltd also donated about 40 nucleic acid testing instruments and a large number of reagents to help improve Hong Kong’s ability to conduct large-scale nucleic acid testing. Moreover, three senior technicians are also preparing to go to Hong Kong and help on-site.
