Sixty new Election Committee members from the grassroots associations subsector promised on Friday to elect patriotic and reliable administrators to enhance the livelihoods of local residents.

The members, who belong to a newly created subsector under the city’s improved electoral system, automatically become part of the new Election Committee, after the Candidate Eligibility Review Committee confirmed that their nominations were valid on Thursday.

Eileen Tsui Li, director-general of the Kowloon Federation of Associations, said she believes that all of the eligible members will become bridges between the grassroots and the government

The new members were nominated by three local associations — the Hong Kong Island Federation, the Kowloon Federation of Associations, and the New Territories Association of Societies

In a joint statement, the 60 new committee members said they will fully support the central government in implementing the principle of “patriots administering Hong Kong”; support the SAR government’s effort to administer the city in strict accordance with the law; and implement the National Security Law for Hong Kong.

They also vowed to lead grassroots communities in greater participation in policymaking, and to play a stronger role in reflecting residents’ opinions to the government.

Eileen Tsui Li, director-general of the Kowloon Federation of Associations, said she believes that all of the eligible members will become bridges between the grassroots and the government, and that they will devote themselves to resolving Hong Kong’s deep-seated livelihood problems, including housing, medical care and employment.

Tsui also said she hopes to elect lawmakers who will genuinely serve the Hong Kong community. “The Legislative Council under the previous electoral system was a farce. What the Hong Kong society needs are people who want to contribute to its future,” she said.

The new committee members also said they will help Hong Kong better integrate into the overall development of the nation, and support local people who want to seize opportunities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Joseph Chan Hoi-wing, a 25-year-old Election Committee member, said he will propose more policy initiatives to help the Hong Kong youth work, live and start a business in the Greater Bay Area. Chan is also the chairman of Hong Kong Youth Association.

He said his example showed that young people in Hong Kong have the opportunities to serve Hong Kong and realize their potentials.
