It is the first time that Shenzhen has issued such certificates for Hong Kong doctors practicing in the city. They are normally filed by the Human Resources and Social Security Department of Guangdong province after examinations, training and years of professional practice in the mainland.

The Shenzhen government in April announced it would simplify the recognition process for Hong Kong and Macao medical personnel to practice on the mainland. The University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital is designated as a pilot hospital of review and examination.

Doctors who have engaged in clinical diagnosis and treatment work in Hong Kong for five years and worked as consultants in HKU-SZH for three years can be recognized as chief physicians in the mainland directly by a review committee, according to the new regulations.

Without a proper title, we would run into hurdles performing some surgeries and applying for scientific research projects, said Lo Chung-mau, CEO of the hospital, who is one of the 37 doctors.

More importantly, he said it is a significant policy that will promote the integration and exchange of medical research and education.
