HK logs 4 imported virus cases, bans Turkish Airlines flights

HONG KONG - Hong Kong logged four new imported COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, pushing the city’s overall infection tally to 11,994.

Three of the new cases were from Turkey, involving a 33-year-old man, a 28-year-old woman and an 8-year-old boy.

The fourth case involved a 20-year-old woman flying in from Greece, according to a statement issued by the Centre for Health Protection.

All but the boy have been inoculated with one shot of the BioNTech vaccine in the United Kingdom. The 28-year-old woman and the boy developed symptoms on Sunday.

The Hong Kong government has banned the landing of passenger flights from Istanbul operated by Turkish Airlines in Hong Kong from Wednesday to Aug 17.

The ban came after four passengers tested positive for the coronavirus upon the airline’s flight TK083 arriving in Hong Kong from Istanbul on Sunday.

In the neighboring special administrative region of Macao, a couple tested preliminarily positive on Tuesday, Macao's health authorities said. Their specimens were collected in Zhuhai a day before. The duo are being treated in Macao.

The man had recently traveled to Zhuhai and Zhongshan, while the woman was in Zhuhai. Their daughter traveled to Xi’an, Shaanxi province, from July 19 to 24.

Also on Tuesday, Secretary for the Civil Service Patrick Nip Tak-kuen visited AIA Hong Kong and Macau for an outreach service of the government’s vaccination program.

Nip and AIA Hong Kong and Macau Chief Executive Officer Alger Fung watched as 400 persons received their BioNTech shots.

"It is encouraging to see that various enterprises have joined hands with the government in promoting the 'Early Vaccination for All' campaign and called on their employees to receive vaccination," Nip said. "I hope that people who get vaccinated will also encourage their family members and friends to receive vaccination so that we can work together to build an immune barrier in Hong Kong."
