European Parliament resolution on HK is all about geopolitics

Nothing reveals the Cold War mentality and the ongoing anti-China crusade behind the European Parliament’s new resolution on Hong Kong better than the EP members’ own words.

“China (Beijing) is attacking freedom in Hong Kong, and indeed the Western world in general”, Francois-Xavier Bellamy, a French member of the European Parliament (MEP) in the center-right European People’s Party, declared after the Parliament adopted on Thursday a resolution that urged the European Commission and the Council of the European Union to take tough measures against Hong Kong.

Indeed, it is now crystal-clear to the whole world that the EP resolution has nothing to do with Hong Kong’s freedom but Washington’s geopolitics. Like Xinjiang, Taiwan, the South China Sea, COVID-19 and even the Belt and Road Initiative, Hong Kong is just another card Washington is playing in its geopolitical game aimed at containing China

Deja vu continues: Bellamy was paraphrasing US President Joe Biden’s narrative of a “systemic” China threat to global democracy — a euphemism for Western powers — without realizing Biden must have been struggling to keep a straight face when he uttered that ridiculous narrative. Indeed, that a China encircled by several hundred US military bases and bombarded by Western ideological propaganda on a daily basis is threatening the Western world guarded by more than 800 US military bases strategically located around the globe simply does not fit into normal logic.

French MEP Thierry Mariani and Spanish MEP Manuel Pineda, two of those opposing the new EP resolution, should have helped anyone who still has difficulty seeing through the Cold War game behind the resolution with their candid comments made during the debate of the resolution. The EU should “not be dragged into another Cold War” by the US, said Mariani, while Pineda asserted that the EU should “stop subordinating ourselves to the US.”

Indeed, it is now crystal-clear to the whole world that the EP resolution has nothing to do with Hong Kong’s freedom but Washington’s geopolitics. Like Xinjiang, Taiwan, the South China Sea, COVID-19 and even the Belt and Road Initiative, Hong Kong is just another card Washington is playing in its geopolitical game aimed at containing China.

In the absence of any legal and moral grounds to support their blatant interference in China’s domestic affairs, the supporters of the EP resolution have parroted the “international commitment” notion, citing the Sino-British Joint Declaration in particular. They must have assumed that people who are interested in or care about Hong Kong know nothing about the Joint Declaration. They have conveniently overlooked the plain fact that the Joint Declaration has in no way deprived China of its sovereign right to safeguard national security and other interests in its Hong Kong Special Administrative Region by exercising its sovereign power over the region. Or are they still very much under the influence of a high dose of colonial nostalgia that they still see Hong Kong as some sort of foreign concession whose future is a matter of discussion among Western powers?
