HONG KONG - An eye-popping vaccine sweetener has been offered in Hong Kong, a metropolis known for having the least affordable housing in the world: a brand new flat worth HK$10.8 million.

The 449-square-foot, one-bedroom flat in the Grand Central, a new apartment complex in Kwun Tong, will be the grand prize of a lucky draw offered by its developers.

The lucky draw offers another 20 prizes with the eligibility expanded to non-permanent residents. All vaccinated residents in Hong Kong, including those on work visas and domestic workers, will be able to win a prepaid or credit card value of HK$100,000 each

In an announcement on Friday, the Sino Group, its charity arm Ng Teng Charitable Foundation and Chinese Estates Holdings said all permanent residents of Hong Kong aged 18 or above are eligible if they have received two shots of their COVID-19 vaccination. Those who were vaccinated before the announcement will be included as well.

The lucky draw offers another 20 prizes with the eligibility expanded to non-permanent residents. All vaccinated residents in Hong Kong, including those on work visas and domestic workers, will be able to win a prepaid or credit card value of HK$100,000 each.

The registration deadline for the lucky draw is Sept 1. Details will be announced later, said the sponsors.

Hong Kong, recording no new infections of COVID-19 for the second day in a row on Friday, needs to overcome one of the world’s worst cases of vaccine hesitancy. As of Thursday, a total of 2,250,227 doses have been administered. The ratio of the population with their first dose is 19.9 percent and that of those fully vaccinated with two shots is 14.4 percent, according to the Hong Kong government.

The government earlier warned that it might have to donate the surplus vaccines to places that need them more. Airport Authority Hong Kong announced on Wednesday that it would give away 60,000 air tickets by lucky draw to local residents who have received the COVID-19 vaccination.
