BERLIN - Second-placed Leipzig dropped points in the title race after sharing the spoils with midtable team Hoffenheim following a 0-0 draw in the curtain-raiser of the 29th round in Bundesliga on Friday.

Leipzig started offensively minded against Hoffenheim, who disrupted the flow of the host's game with a well-positioned bulwark in the opening stages.

Hoffenheim reaped its first noteworthy opportunity of the match with 26 minutes gone when Robert Skov unleashed a dangerous free-kick goalwards.

Leipzig lacked in ideas to overcome Hoffenheim's defense hence the hosts tried to reach success with long-range efforts but Marcel Sabitzer's shot missed the target just wide before the break.

After the restart, the hosts came out highly motivated and produced its first clear-cut chance as Christopher Nkunku forced Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann into action from a tight angle at the hour mark.

Leipzig continued powerfully and should have broken the deadlock moments later, but a wide-open Tyler Adams squandered a promising chance at the far post.

Julian Nagelsmann's men gained the upper hand as the match progressed yet Sabitzer's attempt did not find the target in the 65th minute.

The hosts pressed frenetically for the winner and they thought they had scored the decider in the dying seconds of the game however Yussuf Poulsen's last-gasp goal was disallowed due to a handball in the build-up. Thus, second-placed Leipzig had to settle for a goalless draw to drop vital points.

With the result, Leipzig stays in second place with a four-point gap to front runners Bayern Munich, who plays on Saturday. Meanwhile, Hoffenheim climbs on the 11th spot for now.

"We created a couple of golden chances but left them unused. We were also unlucky with Yussuf Poulsen's handball in the closing stages. It wasn't our best performance, but we were the better team today," Leipzig's head coach Julian Nagelsmann said.

The following matches are set for Saturday: third-placed Wolfsburg clashes with leader Bayern Munich, Borussia Monchengladbach hosts Eintracht Frankfurt, Freiburg sees last-placed Schalke, Union Berlin faces newcomers Stuttgart, Augsburg takes on newly-promoted Arminia Bielefeld and relegation-threatened Cologne travels to Bayer Leverkusen.
