HONG KONG - Hong Kong reported 16 new COVID-19 infections on Wednesday, including 12 local cases, pushing the city’s overall tally to 10,812.

The latest figures marked a slight increase from those of the past two days, when only six and four local cases were recorded respectively.

Ten of the 12 local cases on Wednesday were of unknown origin, Chuang Shuk-kwan, head the Centre for Health Protection’s communicable disease branch, said at a briefing.

Some of the new patients visited their relatives and friends over the Chinese New Year holidays, said Chuang, adding that transmissions may have happened involving dozens of people.

“We will closely monitor the trend in the coming days to see if there is any rebound of cases,” Chuang said.

A 34-year-old unemployed man, who developed symptoms on Sunday, made new year visits on Saturday and Sunday, which led to around 50 people being quarantined, she added.

Chuang also said that  another patient, a civil servant who worked at Student Finance Office in Kai Tak, also made visits and more than 20 were quarantined.

The other untraceable cases included that of a cook at a restaurant on Hoi Pa St in Tsuen Wan, and a restaurant worker at Wealth Commercial Centre in Mong Kok, where 11 and nine close contacts would be quarantined.

There were also 10 people who tested preliminarily positive for the coronavirus, Chuang added.

With the city’s entertainment venues set to resume operations on Thursday, Ocean Park said in a notice that the theme park would also reopen on Thursday for visitors who successfully make online reservations.

Hong Kong Disneyland said it will reopen on Friday and visitors can start booking their slots starting 10 am on Thursday.

All visitors would be required to use the government’s COVID-19 contact tracing app LeaveHomeSafe before entering the two theme parks, which had been closed since early December last year when the fourth wave of infections hit the city.

Replying to inquiries from local media on Wednesday, Sinovac Biotech confirmed that the first batch of 1 million doses of its coronavirus vaccine was expected to arrive in Hong Kong on Friday. Hong Kong’s panel of experts on vaccination  suggested on Tueday that the government approve the emergency use of Sinovac's vaccine.
