BEIJING -  China is discussing specific arrangements with the World Health Organization (WHO) for an expert panel's trip to the country to trace the origin of COVID-19, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Thursday, citing information from Chinese health authorities.

Spokesperson Hua Chunying made the remarks at a daily press briefing in response to a query claiming that British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne and Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato recently urged China to agree to the trip as soon as possible.

Hua stressed that the origin-tracing of the virus is a scientific problem which is up to scientists to carry out cooperation on a global scale.

China's invitation of the WHO expert panel to the country constitutes scientific cooperation between scientists from the two sides on the issue of origin-tracing. "The goal is to prevent and better respond to similar public health crises that may arise in the future. China has always taken a positive attitude towards this," she said.

"We have noted the irresponsible remarks made by some people, and we  should be highly vigilant against this," Hua said, adding that engaging in political manipulation, posturing or making an issue out of the origin-tracing of the virus will only interfere with normal international cooperation on the issue, Hua said.

"This is what we do not want to see and what is unacceptable to the international community," she added.
