BEIJING - The United States will pay a heavy price for its wrongdoing in issues concerning Taiwan and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Thursday.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement that the United States will consider sanctions and other restrictions on any and all individuals and entities involved in the arrest of over 50 people in Hong Kong, and the US Ambassador to the United Nations Kelly Craft will visit Taiwan.

In response, spokesperson Hua Chunying told a daily news briefing that Pompeo's statement seriously violated the basic norms of international relations, interfered with China's internal affairs and judicial sovereignty, and violated the one-China principle and the provisions of the three Sino-US joint communiques. China firmly opposes and strongly condemns it.

We urge the United States to immediately stop interfering in China's internal affairs, harming China's interests and undermining bilateral relations.

Hua Chinying, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson

Reiterating that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is an inalienable part of the Chinese territory, Hua said the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing China, a fact recognized by the international community.

"China firmly opposes any form of official exchanges between the United States and Taiwan. This position is consistent and clear," she said.

As for the Hong Kong issue, Hua said Hong Kong is a society under the rule of law where everyone stands equal in front of the law and no one has impunity. "We firmly support the relevant departments of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to crack down on illegal and criminal activities in accordance with the law and oppose any country, organization and individual interfering in Hong Kong affairs and disrupting the rule of law in Hong Kong in any way."

Recently, a handful of anti-China politicians in the Trump administration have continuously staged "last-day madness," and deliberately undermined China-US relations to serve their personal political interests. Hua said their actions go against the historical trend and the friendly public opinion of the two peoples, which will inevitably be punished by history.

"We urge the United States to immediately stop interfering in China's internal affairs, harming China's interests and undermining bilateral relations. China will take all necessary measures to resolutely safeguard its sovereignty and security interests. The US side will surely pay a heavy price for its wrongdoing," she said.

'Stop official exchanges with Taiwan'

Meanwhile, a Chinese military spokesperson on Thursday urged the United States to immediately stop any form of official exchange and military ties with Taiwan.

The PLA, with its firm resolve and strong ability, will thwart any form of interference by external forces and attempts by "Taiwan independence" secessionist forces, said Tan Kefei, spokesperson for China's Ministry of National Defense

Tan Kefei, the spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense, made the remarks in response to a so-called "political and military dialogue" held between the United States and the Taiwan authorities via video link on Thursday.

China strongly condemns the US act that is in serious violation of the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques, Tan said, adding that the Chinese side has lodged stern representations with the US side.

The Taiwan question is China's internal affair, bears on China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, involves China's core interests, and brooks no foreign interference, Tan said, adding that "we urge the United States to immediately stop any form of official exchange and military ties with Taiwan."

Tan said that the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), with its firm resolve and strong ability, will thwart any form of interference by external forces and attempts by "Taiwan independence" secessionist forces.

The PLA will firmly defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and safeguard peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits, he added.

'Stop political manipulation'

Also on Thursday, a Chinese mainland spokesperson urged the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration in Taiwan to stop political manipulation of HKSAR affairs.

Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, made the remarks when asked to comment on the DPP authority's irresponsible finger-pointing over the arrest of some individuals suspected of violating the National Security Law in Hong Kong.

The DPP administration’s acts once again revealed its evil intention to create chaos in Hong Kong and seek "Taiwan independence," Zhu said, urging it to stop political manipulation of Hong Kong affairs and its "despicable" moves encouraging illegal activities.

Zhu also voiced firm opposition to any form of official ties between the United States and China's Taiwan region.
