ADEN, Yemen - The United Nations Special Envoy to Yemen Martin Griffiths announced on Tuesday that he will soon visit the southern port city of Aden to meet the new power-sharing government based there.

A brief statement released by the UN envoy's office on the official Twitter account stated that "Griffiths will be visiting Riyadh and Aden in the next few days, to meet with the Yemeni president and the newly formed cabinet."

It said Griffiths will first head to Riyadh meet Yemen's President Abdu-Rabbu Mansour Hadi as well as senior Saudi officials, then visit Aden to meet Prime Minister Maeen Abdulmalik and members of the country's new government.

Griffiths is mediating between the Yemeni government and the Houthi rebel group, with the aim of finding a peaceful solution to end the years-long bloody conflict between the two warring rivals.

The UN is trying to end the war in Yemen that has killed tens of thousands of people, mostly civilians, displaced 4 million, and pushed over 20 million to the brink of starvation.

It describes the humanitarian crisis in Yemen as the worst on the planet, with hunger, acute malnutrition, epidemics, and economic blockade killing thousands of Yemen's children.
