New service allows Macao residents to pay Guangdong bills from home
By Zhou Mo

Macao residents now can pay public-utility and livelihood-service bills incurred in Guangdong province from home via their cellphones or computers.

The Guangzhou Branch of the People’s Bank of China and the monetary authorities in the Macao Special Administrative Region launched the cross-boundary electronic bill direct-payment business earlier this week. The service allows Macao residents to pay bills locally through 10 banks, including the Bank of China Macao Branch, the Bank of Communications Macao Branch, Macau Chinese Bank, and CMB Wing Lung Bank Macao Branch.

The move marks a milestone in cross-border financial cooperation, which is expected to facilitate cross-boundary living and promote cross-boundary flow of people in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

The connection between Guangdong and Macao has been deepening in recent years, with a growing number of people from Macao choosing to work, live and set up business across the boundary.

In 2019, Macao residents made 53.58 million trips in and out of the mainland, an average of 78 visits per resident, according to official statistics.
