Liaison Office expresses sorrow for fire victims

The Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on Monday expressed sorrow over the loss of lives in Sunday’s deadly blaze.

In a statement issued by the office to express concern over the deadly fire that broke out in Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon on Sunday evening, the office expressed its sincere condolences to the families of the victims and the injured.

At least seven people, including a 9-year-old boy, were killed after flames engulfed a four-story building. Another 10 people, mostly of Nepalese ethnicity, remain in hospital for treatment.

It is believed that the fire began on the first floor, where a birthday party was being held in a Nepalese restaurant.

The liaison office will provide assistance should the HKSAR government need any, according to the statement.

Meanwhile, Xu Luying, spokeswoman for the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, on Monday expressed her condolences to the victims of the fire and her concern for the injured and victims' family members.
