HK reports 11 new virus cases, two students infected

HONG KONG - Hong Kong reported 11 new coronavirus infections on Wednesday, including three cases of unknown origin.

The latest cases involved a 57-year-old man living at Home of Treasure, a private care home for persons with disabilities in Kwai Chung, Chuang Shuk-kwan, head of the communicable disease branch of the Centre for Health Protection, said at a press briefing. 

Two other residents at the care home also tested preliminarily positive, Chuang added.

The university said in an internal email that the infected student is a biology sophomore who visited its Kowloon Tong campus from Sept 28 to 30, and that relevant classrooms and facilities need to be closed for disinfection.

The Tseung Kwan O school issued a notice that on-campus classes and other activities would be suspended on Wednesday and Thursday for a thorough sterilization.

Over the past four days, at least four other schools had temporarily suspended face-to-face classes after their students were identified as close contacts of confirmed COVID-19 patients.

The latest cases on Wednesday also included three salesmen who worked at three different pharmacies in Mong Kok.

The rest of the local cases involved three women, aged 24, 34 and 36, who once lived together at Holly Mansion in Tsim Sha Tsui. One of them had visited China Secret, a pub in the same district. They were linked to an infection cluster related to the pub, which now involves nine patients.

The two imported cases were from India who arrived on Oct 5 via Air India flight AI380. The city’s overall tally stood at 5,143.

Meanwhile, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department said in a statement on Wednesday that the 8th Hong Kong Games has been postponed for a year due to the COVID-19 epidemic situation.

Athlete selection in the 18 districts, originally scheduled to start this year, will be held from April 2021 to January 2022 instead, while inter-district sports competitions will begin in March 2022.
