19 new cases on mainland, virus detected in Brazil meat product

BEIJING/URUMQI - Chinese health authorities said Thursday that they received reports of 19 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland Wednesday, including 11 imported cases and eight locally transmitted ones.

All the new local cases were reported in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, the National Health Commission said in its daily report. They were all posted in the regional capital Urumqi, according to the local health authorities.

Eleven out of the 19 new cases were local infections posted in Xinjiang's Urumqi while the others were imported cases reported in Shandong, Shanghai, Guangdong, Sichuan and Hebei

Four new imported cases were reported in Shandong, two cases each in Shanghai, Guangdong and Sichuan, and one in Hebei, the commission said.

One new suspected imported case was reported in Shanghai.

No deaths related to the disease were reported, the commission said, adding that 56 more patients were discharged from hospitals after recovery.

By the end of Wednesday, a total of 2,227 imported cases had been reported on the mainland. Out of those cases, 2,065 had been discharged from hospitals after recovery while 162 remained hospitalized, with one in serious condition. No deaths from imported cases had been reported.

So far, a total of 84,756 confirmed cases had been reported on the mainland, including 79,398 recoveries and 4,634 deaths.

There were still 724 patients being treated, with 41 in severe condition, according to the commission.

It also said that there were four suspected cases on the mainland.

According to the commission, 22,498 close contacts were still under medical observation after 1,284 were released from observation.

Twenty new asymptomatic cases, including five reported in Urumqi and 15 from outside the mainland, were reported while no asymptomatic cases were re-categorized as confirmed ones.

The commission said 295 asymptomatic cases, including 150 from outside the mainland, were still under medical observation.

By Wednesday, 4,243 confirmed cases, including 63 deaths, had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), while 46 confirmed cases had been reported in the Macao SAR, and 481, including seven deaths, in Taiwan.

A total of 3,189 COVID-19 patients in the Hong Kong SAR, 46 in the Macao SAR, and 450 in Taiwan had been discharged from hospitals after recovery.

In Shenzhen, the coronavirus was found in a sample of a frozen chicken wing imported from Brazil, according to a statement from the local government.

Virus tests of people who have possibly come into contact with the product - and tests of related products - all came back negative, the government said.

Earlier, the outside of an Ecuador frozen shrimp package tested positive for coronavirus in a restaurant in Wuhu, Anhui province, state television CCTV reported.
