HONG KONG - The Hong Kong government on Wednesday proposed to have new civil servants joining the service on or after July 1 this year declare to uphold the Basic Law and pledge allegiance to the special administrative region.

In a document submitted to the Legislative Council, the government said the move is in line with a requirement under the national security law for Hong Kong, which was enacted last week by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.

The document, compiled by the Civil Service Bureau, also stressed the need for appropriate actions should there be any violation of the law. The bureau said it will continue to consult with the secretary for justice and civil service unions on the proposal.

The Legislative Council Panel on Public Service will discuss the proposal on Friday.
