PARIS - The football continental competitions in Europe - the Champions League and Europa League - which have both been suspended in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, will restart in August with an eight-team mini-tournament format, UEFA confirmed on Wednesday.

The Champions League will resume with the second-leg of the remaining four last-16 games played on August 7 and 8

The decision was made in an executive committee meeting held by video conference in the afternoon. The governing body of European football also confirmed that all 12 original host cities will stage matches of the delayed Euro 2020 finals next year.

The Champions League will resume with the second-leg of the remaining four last-16 games played on August 7 and 8 - Manchester City vs Real Madrid, Bayern Munich vs Chelsea, Juventus vs Olympique Lyonnais and Barcelona vs Napoli.

All of the four games will be played at the original venues.

The following quarterfinals and semifinals will be staged in one-leg format and will be hosted in Lisbon between August 12 to 19. The final was scheduled on August 23 in the Portuguese capital. However, the draw for the knockout-stage games will take place earlier on July 10 at UEFA's headquarters in Nyon.

Istanbul, which was originally appointed to host the 2020 final, will now instead be the venue for the 2021 edition, with all other scheduled hosts moving back a year, UEFA said.

The Europa League will come back in a similar format at German venues from August 10 to August 21. The remaining last-16 games will be played on August 5 and 6.

"A decision will be made in due course on whether these matches for which the first leg has already been played will be staged at the home team's venue or in Germany," a UEFA statement said.

"Inter Milan v Getafe and Sevilla v Roma, whose first leg was also postponed, will be played as a single leg at a venue to be confirmed."

The women's Champions League will also be a knockout tournament, held in northern Spain between August 21 to 30.
