Wuhan reports no new asymptomatic cases for 1st time

BEIJING/WUHAN/CHANGCHUN/HARBIN - Wuhan, the city in central China's Hubei province previously hit hard by the novel coronavirus, reported no new asymptomatic cases Sunday, the first time since the provincial capital released figures on the virus carriers showing no symptoms.

The city conducted more than 60,000 nucleic acid tests on Sunday, finding no new asymptomatic cases, according to a statement issued Monday by the municipal health commission.

Wuhan started a campaign on May 14 to expand nucleic acid testing in order to better know the number of asymptomatic cases or people who show no clear symptoms despite carrying the virus.

The Chinese mainland reported 16 new COVID-19 cases Sunday, all of which were imported, bringing the total number of imported cases to 1,756, the National Health Commission said Monday.

Among the cases, 11 were reported in Sichuan province, three in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, and two in Guangdong province, the commission said.

No deaths related to the disease or new suspected cases were reported, according to the commission.

On Sunday, three people were discharged from hospitals after recovery. The number of severe cases remains at three.

As of Sunday, the overall confirmed cases on the mainland had reached 83,017, including 76 patients who were still being treated, and 78,307 people who had been discharged after recovery.

Altogether, 4,634 people had died of the disease, the commission said.

By Sunday, the mainland had reported a total of 1,756 imported cases. Out of those cases, 1,694 had been discharged from hospitals after recovery while 62 remained hospitalized, none in severe conditions. No deaths from imported cases had been reported.

The commission said three people were suspected of being infected with the virus, all were imported from overseas.

According to the commission, 4,723 close contacts were still under medical observation after 914 people were released from medical observation Sunday.

Also on Sunday, 16 new asymptomatic cases were reported on the mainland. No cases were re-categorized as confirmed cases, and eight asymptomatic cases were released from medical observation.

The commission said 397 asymptomatic cases, including 34 from overseas, were still under medical observation.

Hubei

Hubei reported zero newly confirmed cases and asymptomatic cases on Sunday, the provincial health commission said Monday.

By Sunday, Hubei had three confirmed cases, including one in severe condition.

Two asymptomatic cases were released from quarantine, reducing the total number of such cases under medical observation to 320 by Sunday. 

One patient in Wuhan was discharged from hospital on Sunday, bringing the total number of recoveries in the province to 63,620.

Hubei has so far reported 68,135 confirmed cases, including 50,340 in Wuhan. A total of 4,512 people had died of COVID-19 in the province by Sunday, including 3,869 in Wuhan.

Jilin

No new confirmed and asymptomatic cases were reported in northeast China's Jilin province on Sunday, the provincial health commission said Monday.

As of Sunday, Jilin had reported no new cases of local transmission for eight consecutive days.

By Sunday, the province had reported a total of 136 such cases, including two deaths and 125 recoveries.

There were still nine patients receiving treatment in hospital, all in the city of Jilin, with two in severe condition. A total of 1,627 people in close contact with cases transmitted locally had been placed under medical observation, of which 838 were released from medical observation.

Heilongjiang

No new confirmed cases were reported in northeast China's Heilongjiang province on Sunday, the provincial health commission said Monday.

Two new asymptomatic cases were reported Sunday, bringing the number of such cases to 13.

A total of 253 close contacts in the province were still under medical observation.

By Sunday, Heilongjiang had reported a total of 559 cases transmitted locally and 386 imported cases.

HK, Macao, Taiwan

By Sunday, 1,084 confirmed cases, including four deaths, had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), 45 confirmed cases in the Macao SAR, and 442 in Taiwan, including seven deaths.

A total of 1,037 patients in Hong Kong, 45 in Macao, and 423 in Taiwan had been discharged from hospitals after recovery.
