Mainland sees 2 new imported cases, zero new local cases

BEIJING/SHANGHAI/HARBIN/WUHAN/CHANGCHUN - Chinese health authorities said Thursday that no new COVID-19 cases transmitted domestically were reported on the Chinese mainland on Wednesday.

Two imported cases were reported on the mainland, with one seen in Shanghai and the other in Fujian, the National Health Commission said in its daily report.

The case in Shanghai involves a Chinese national who departed from Mexico and arrived at Shanghai Pudong International Airport on May 24, according to local health authorities. The patient showed symptoms during the isolated observation period and was later confirmed as a COVID-19 patient.

The patient has been sent to a designated hospital for medical treatment. Six close contacts on the flight have been put under concentrated quarantine.

Meanwhile, no deaths related to the disease were reported, according to the commission.

On Wednesday, eight patients were discharged from hospitals after recovery, while the number of severe cases decreased by one to four.

As of Wednesday, a total of 82,995 confirmed COVID-19 cases had been reported on the mainland, and 4,634 people had died of the disease.

Altogether, 78,288 patients had been cured and discharged from hospitals by the end of Wednesday, the commission said, adding that there were 73 patients still being treated.

By Wednesday, the mainland had reported a total of 1,734 imported cases. Out of those cases, 1,688 had been discharged from hospitals after recovery, and 46 remained hospitalized. No deaths from imported cases had been reported.

Five people were suspected of being infected with the virus by Wednesday, the commission said, noting that four of the cases were imported from overseas.

A total of 5,641 close contacts were still under medical observation by Wednesday, said the commission.

Also on Wednesday, 23 new asymptomatic cases were reported on the mainland. No cases were re-categorized as confirmed cases, and 14 asymptomatic cases were released from medical observation.

The commission said 413 asymptomatic cases, including 24 from overseas, were still under medical observation.

Hubei

No new confirmed cases were reported in central China's Hubei province on Wednesday, the provincial health commission said Thursday.

By Wednesday, Hubei had five confirmed COVID-19 cases, including two in severe condition.

The province reported 19 new asymptomatic cases on Wednesday while seven were released from quarantine. The total number of such cases under medical observation was 344 by Wednesday. 

Jilin

The provincial health commission of Jilin said Thursday that no new confirmed cases and asymptomatic cases were reported in province on Wednesday.

It was the fourth consecutive day that Jilin has reported no new confirmed cases.

As of Wednesday, the province had reported a total of 136 confirmed cases transmitted locally, including two deaths and 114 recoveries.

There were still 20 patients receiving treatment in hospital, with two in severe condition, all in the city of Jilin. A total of 1,627 people in close contact with those cases transmitted locally were still under medical observation.

Shanghai

With the addition of the newly confirmed imported case, Shanghai has registered 330 imported cases in total by Wednesday. Only eight of the patients remain hospitalized while the rest had been discharged from hospitals after recovery, according to the municipal health commission.

The municipality has so far reported 341 confirmed cases transmitted locally by Wednesday, including seven deaths. 

Heilongjiang

No new confirmed cases were reported in northeast China's Heilongjiang province Wednesday, the provincial health commission said Thursday.

As of Wednesday, the province had 11 asymptomatic COVID-19 cases after four such cases were reported Wednesday.

A total of 235 close contacts of COVID-19 patients in the province were still under medical observation.

The province had reported a total of 559 cases or local transmission and 386 imported cases by Wednesday. 

HK, Macao, Taiwan

By Wednesday, 1,066 confirmed cases including four deaths had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), 45 confirmed cases in the Macao SAR, and 441 in Taiwan including seven deaths.

A total of 1,034 patients in Hong Kong, 45 in Macao, and 419 in Taiwan had been discharged from hospitals after recovery.
