China denounces US' messages to Taiwan leader

BEIJING - The Chinese Foreign Ministry on Wednesday expressed strong indignation and condemnation over congratulatory messages sent by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and other officials to Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen on her inauguration.

According to a statement released by the ministry, Pompeo has called Tsai "Taiwan's president" and hyped up the US-Taiwan "partnership" in his statement on Tsai's inauguration. Some US officials and politicians also sent video congratulations to Tsai.

There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, according to a statement issued by China's Foreign Ministry

"The above-mentioned moves constitute a severe violation of the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques, and a serious interference in China's internal affairs. China expresses strong indignation and condemnation over such moves," according to the statement.

There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, according to the statement.

According to the Joint Communique on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the People's Republic of China and the United States of America signed in December 1978, the United States of America recognizes the government of the People's Republic of China as the sole legal government of China. Within this context, the people of the United States will maintain cultural, commercial and other unofficial relations with the people of Taiwan.

"The words and deeds aforementioned severely violate the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques, and brazenly go against the commitments made by the US government itself," according to the statement.

They have sent wrong signals to "Taiwan independence" secessionist forces, thus seriously damaging peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits as well as China-US relations, it said.

We'd like to warn the US side that "Taiwan independence" has no way out. Indulging and supporting such forces is doomed to fail.

Chinese Foreign Ministry's statement

The Taiwan question concerns China's sovereignty and territorial integrity and China's core interests, according to the statement, adding that the Chinese government and people are firmly resolved in opposing secessionist activities of "Taiwan independence" forces, safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity, standing against any foreign interference in China's internal affairs and striving for national reunification.

"We'd like to warn the US side that 'Taiwan independence' has no way out. Indulging and supporting such forces is doomed to fail," according to the statement, adding that any action that undermines China's core interests and interferes in China's internal affairs will meet vigorous countermeasures by China and will not stop the historical trend of China's reunification.

China urges the United States to correct its mistake immediately, abide by the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques, sever official links and cease improving substantial relations with Taiwan, stop interfering in China's internal affairs, and stop any words and deeds undermining peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits and China-US relations.

"China will take necessary countermeasures against the above-mentioned erroneous moves of the United States. The consequences arising therefrom shall be taken by the US side," according to the statement.  

'Wrong and dangerous' move

Ma Xiaoguang, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, urged the United States to respect the basic norms of international relations and stop any form of official exchanges with the Taiwan region

China's Ministry of National Defense on Wednesday expressed similar sentiment, saying the move by US officials was “extremely wrong and very dangerous.

The ministry stressed that Taiwan question is China's internal affairs and concerns China's core interests and the national feelings of 1.4 billion Chinese people.   

"We strongly oppose any form of official exchanges and military contacts by any country with Taiwan," the ministry said, stressing "we will never allow anyone, any organization or any political party, at any time and in any form, to separate any part of the Chinese territory from China."

The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) has a firm will, full confidence and sufficient capabilities to defeat any interference by foreign forces and any secessionist attempt for "Taiwan independence" in any form, the ministry stressed.   

The PLA will take all necessary measures to safeguard China's sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as the peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits, said the ministry.

Respecting basic norms

Meanwhile, a Chinese mainland spokesperson urged the United States to respect the basic norms of international relations and stop any form of official exchanges with the Taiwan region.

Ma Xiaoguang, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, also urged the United States to adhere to the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques.

Stressing that both sides of the Taiwan Straits belong to one China and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, Ma said the mainland has a firm will, full confidence and sufficient capabilities to defeat any interference by foreign forces and any secessionist attempt for "Taiwan independence" in any form.
