Macao confirms 2 new infections, tally reaches 33

HONG KONG - Macao on Thursday confirmed two more coronavirus infections, bringing the tally in the special administrative region to 33. Both patients are Filipino nationals working in Macao.

One of them is a 31-year-old man who works at a bakery and the other is a 37-year-old female cleaner at a hotel. They are known to be friends. 

On March 17, they took the same flight in adjacent seats from Manila to Hong Kong where they took a bus to Macao via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. They showed no symptoms at the checkpoints, but were put under a 14-day home quarantine.

During the quarantine period, the two did not leave their homes and had no contact with anyone. The man developed a cough and runny nose on March 24 while the woman remained asymptomatic. Results of their deep throat salvia tests came positive to the novel coronavirus on Thursday.

Their roommates have been put under medical observation in designated hotels and will be tested for the virus.

Also on Thursday, Macao reported a suspected case involving a 43-year-old local resident who had visited Manila before returning to Macao via Hong Kong with his two children on March 18.

He showed no symptoms when he entered Macao but was tested initially positive to the virus on Thursday. He said he had no contacts with his family members while being quarantined at home.   

Meanwhile, Guangdong province announced that starting from 6 am Friday, all people entering the country through the province’s checkpoints will need to take virus tests and observe the 14-day mandatory quarantine at designated locations.

The measure also covers people from the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions and Taiwan. The arrivals need to bear all costs relating to the quarantine.
