Hong Kong's average temperature this year is forecast to be among the top 10 highest on record, the Observatory said on Monday.

It also forecast that Hong Kong could see four to seven tropical typhoons within 500 kilometers off the coast as early as the beginning of the typhoon season in June.

2019 was the warmest year in Hong Kong, with an average temperature of 24.5 C, since record began in 1884.

Cheng Cho-Ming, the Observatory’s head forecaster, said at a press conference that it was hard to predict whether there would be another super typhoon like Mangkhut, which, in 2018, wreaked havoc across the Pearl River Delta, forcing the cancellation of thousands of flights, toppling thousands of trees and injuring hundreds of people in Hong Kong.

The total rainfall this year is expected to be about the same as usual or a little less, ranging from 2,000 to 2,600 mm.

There was no sign suggesting earthquakes would occur, Cheng said, but the Observatory will continue to keep a close watch.
