COVID-19: Hubei reports just 1 new confirmed case for 2nd day

WUHAN - Central China's Hubei province reported just one new confirmed case of COVID-19 and 11 deaths Tuesday, the provincial health commission said Wednesday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the hard-hit province to 67,800.

The newly confirmed case was reported in Wuhan, the provincial capital and epicenter of the outbreak.

As of Tuesday, Hubei had seen no new confirmed COVID-19 cases for 13 consecutive days in its 16 cities and prefectures outside Wuhan.

The Chinese mainland for the first time reported zero new local suspected cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, Mi Feng, an official with the National Health Commission said Wednesday.

All of the 21 suspected cases reported Tuesday across the mainland were imported cases, Mi said at a press conference in Beijing.

The number of existing suspected cases has been reduced to zero as well after ruling out three suspected cases on Tuesday, according to the commission.

Earlier in the day, the commission said it received reports of 13 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 11 deaths on the mainland on Tuesday.

A total of 922 people were discharged from hospital after recovery, while the number of severe cases decreased by 208 to 2,622.

In Hubei, 896 patients were discharged from hospital after recovery on Tuesday, bringing the total number of discharged patients in the province to 56,883.

Among the 7,336 hospitalized patients, 2,077 were still in severe condition and another 503 in critical condition.

The overall confirmed cases on the mainland had reached 80,894 by the end of Tuesday, including 8,056 patients who were still being treated, 69,601 patients who had been discharged after recovery, and 3,237 people who died of the disease.

The commission said that 119 people were still suspected of being infected with the virus.

The commission added that 9,222 close contacts were still under medical observation. On Tuesday, 1,014 people were discharged from medical observation.

Twelve imported cases were reported on the mainland Tuesday. Among them, five were reported in Guangdong province, three in Beijing, three in Shanghai, and one in Sichuan province. By the end of Tuesday, 155 imported cases had been reported, said the commission.

By the end of Tuesday, 167 confirmed cases including four deaths had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), 13 confirmed cases in the Macao SAR, and 77 in Taiwan including one death.  

A total of 92 patients in Hong Kong, 10 in Macao and 22 in Taiwan had been discharged from hospital after recovery.
