Efforts to discredit China will fail, US told
By Cao Desheng and Wang Qingyun

China's top diplomat Yang Jiechi told US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday that Beijing strongly opposes and condemns certain US politicians' slanderous stigmatization of China during the novel coronavirus outbreak.

Yang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, had a telephone conversation on Monday night with Pompeo.

Beijing urged Washington to strengthen communication and cooperation with China and the international community and jointly uphold global public health security, Yang Jiechi said

Yang said that China's arduous effort to curb the spread of the virus had bought time for global epidemic control.

He said that any attempt by the US to discredit China will not succeed and any act that undermines the interests of the country will be resolutely fought by the Chinese side, he said.

Further support

China will provide emergency medical support to the Philippines and Spain to help them contain the novel coronavirus, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said, calling for swift cooperation among countries to curb the pandemic.

Wang's counterparts from the Philippines and Spain talked with him over the phone on Sunday.

They said their countries hope China will help them ease the shortage of medical materials, as well as offer other assistance to tackle the disease, according to the ministry.

Both countries have offered "invaluable support" to China in its fight against the virus, and China will work with them to overcome the difficulties they are experiencing, Wang said.

In his phone call with Spanish Foreign Minister Arancha Gonzalez Laya, Wang noted that the number of Spain's cases is rising rapidly, and he expressed his sympathy to the Spanish people.
