13-year-old among 7 arrested for assault, unlawful assembly

HONG KONG - Hong Kong police on Wednesday arrested seven suspects for illegal assembly and assault in January in Central district. The youngest suspect is 13 years old, a spokesman for the police said on Thursday.

On Jan 19, a group of masked radicals clad in black attire assaulted police officers with bricks, umbrellas and batons after police tried to disperse the crowd in an anti-government rally that was spinning out of control.

Four police officers were injured in the incident with some of them suffering from fractures of fingers and skull, Chou said.

Among the seven suspects, six are under the age of 20.

Chou said it’s worrisome that people so young have got involved in unlawful acts. 

The 13-year-old suspect was released on bail while others remained in custody pending further investigation.
