By Tommy Yuen

HONG KONG – The Hong Kong government on Monday encouraged local scientists and researchers to apply for public funding to develop cutting-edge technology in fighting the novel coronavirus outbreak.

In a statement, the Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC) said that the funding scheme would cover research and development in detection, diagnosis and surveillance of the COVID-19 virus or in the reduction of risks of infection and spread.

The aim is not only to promote the realization and commercialization of local R&D efforts, but also to encourage the public sector to use technologies for tackling the COVID-19 epidemic in Hong Kong, an ITC spokesman said

Each successful applicant would receive up to HK$2 million while a higher ceiling of funding would be considered for individual projects if necessary and justified, according to the statement.

The maximum duration of a project is 12 months. Priority will be given to projects which can be completed within a shorter time frame.

The R&D outcomes should be immediately ready for trials by government departments or the relevant public organizations to bring about benefits for the community in fighting the epidemic in the near future, according to the statement.
