New cases of recovery exceed new infections for 9th day in China

BEIJING/WUHAN - The newly reported cases of recovered patients on the Chinese mainland has surpassed that of new novel coronavirus infections for the ninth consecutive day, the National Health Commission said Thursday.

Chinese health authorities said Thursday it received reports of 433 new confirmed cases of novel coronavirus infection and 29 deaths on Wednesday from 31 provincial-level regions on the mainland.

There were 433 new confirmed cases reported on Wednesday, said the National Health Commission, adding that 2,750 people were discharged from hospital on that day

A total of 2,750 people were discharged from hospital after recovery on Wednesday, the commission said.

Wednesday marked the eighth consecutive day that the daily number of new infections on the mainland remained under 1,000.

Hubei province, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, reported 409 new confirmed cases and 26 deaths on Wednesday, the provincial health commission said, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the hard-hit province to 65,596. 

Wuhan, the provincial capital, reported 383 new confirmed cases and 19 new deaths on Wednesday. In total, the city has registered 47,824 confirmed cases and 2,104 deaths.

Besides the 26 newly reported deaths in Hubei, the other three newly reported fatalities on Wednesday were in Beijing, Heilongjiang and Henan, respectively, according to the National Health Commission. 

A total of 32,495 patients infected with the novel coronavirus had been discharged from hospital by the end of Wednesday, according to the commission.

In Hubei, 2,288 patients were discharged from hospital after recovery on Wednesday, bringing the total number of discharged patients in the province to 23,200.

Among the 34,978 hospitalized patients, 6,581 were still in severe condition and another 1,403 in critical condition.

Hubei reported 409 new confirmed cases on Wednesday, among which 383 were in Wuhan

The provincial commission also said Hubei had 2,019 suspected cases, after 448 suspected cases were ruled out while 403 new suspected cases were reported on Wednesday.

There were 508 new suspected cases on Wednesday, the National Health Commission said, while the number of severe cases went down by 406 to 8,346.

By the end of Wednesday, a total of 78,497 confirmed cases of novel coronavirus infection had been reported in 31 provincial-level regions on Chinese mainland, and 2,744 people had died of the disease.

The commission added that 2,358 people were still suspected of being infected with the virus.

The commission said 652,174 close contacts had been traced, adding that among them, 12,823 were released from medical observation Wednesday, and 71,572 others were still under medical observation.

By the end of Wednesday, 91 confirmed cases including two deaths had been reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), 10 confirmed cases in the Macao SAR, and 32 in Taiwan including one death.

Twenty-four patients in Hong Kong, seven in Macao and five in Taiwan had been discharged from hospital after recovery.
