Chinese shares end higher Thursday

BEIJING — Major Chinese stock indices ended higher Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.11 percent to end at 2,991.33 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.32 percent higher at 11,534.02 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 1.05 trillion yuan (about US$149.6 billion), shrinking from 1.31 trillion yuan the previous trading day.

Gainers outnumbered losers 734 to 677 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,101 to 1,012 in Shenzhen.

Stocks in the food and beverages technology services led the gains, with shares of Sanquan Food Co., Ltd. based in central China's Henan province surging 8.54 percent to 18.43 yuan.

Catering companies also notched solid gains, as shares of the household chain China Quanjude Group Co., Ltd. edged up 6.55 percent to 9.93 yuan apiece.

Bucking the upward trend, shares in the property sector led the losses, with leading real estate developer Gemdale Corporation falling 2.63 percent to 14.08 yuan.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.73 percent to close at 2,196.71 points.
