SYDNEY - The Chinese women's football team recorded a 1-1 draw against Australia in their final Group B match in Sydney on Thursday evening, with a late goal by China's Tang Jiali matched by an overtime equalizer from Aussie, Emily van Egmond.

China will now face South Korea in two play-off matches as they vie for a place in the Tokyo Olympics while Australia will face Vietnam.

Australia looked set for disappointment in front of an enthusiastic home crowd as China dominated the second half, however two minutes into injury time, an on-target belter by Van Egmond from outside the box secured the draw.

Earlier, Chinese goalie Peng Shimeng had to work overtime to keep several dangerous Aussie attacks out of the net, leaving both sides pointless at halftime.

Returning to the pitch for the second half, China were ready to assert themselves, creating several chances including a long range effort by striker Wang Shanshan which deflected off the top corner post.

The Chinese women blew another chance when Wang pinged a clear shot in front of goal well over the bar at which point it seemed neither team would make the breakthrough before the final whistle.

However with just four minutes left in regular time, Tang found the back of the net with an assist from Ma Jun, in what seemed to be the winning goal.

With the match all but over, Van Egmond took full advantage of a loose ball, firing one into the top corner and beyond the outstretched fingers Peng.
