BUENOS AIRES - Argentinian midfielder Fernando Gago has undergone successful knee surgery as he begins his recovery from a fifth major injury in as many years, his club Velez Sarsfield said on Monday.

The 33-year-old suffered a "partial tear" of tissue graft used in previous surgery on his right knee while playing for Velez in their 1-1 home draw with Aldosivi on January 30.
"The result of the operation was satisfactory," read a statement on Velez's official website.

Gago, who has been capped 61 times for Argentina, also reassured fans that the procedure went smoothly.
"I'm really well," the former Real Madrid, Roma and Valencia playmaker said in an Instagram post.
In addition to his latest injury, Gago has sustained three Achilles tendon tears and a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament since 2015.
