Arrests after vandalism in Tseung Kwan O

HONG KONG – Police on Saturday night arrested 60 people in Tseung Kwan O town of New Territories after a group of riotous radicals blocked roads and hurled bricks and hard objects at police when the latter arrived to clear the road.

Police used pepper spray, tear gas and rubber baton rounds to disperse the mob, according to government and police press releases. 

Around 10pm, a large group of radicals unlawfully assembled in the vicinity of Sheung Tak Estate area and blocked the roads with barricades. They damaged traffic lights, dug up bricks on the sidewalk and threw them on the thoroughfare.

When police arrived at scene, some rioters hurled bricks and hard objects at police officers and damaged a police vehicle.

Police officers, in response, have deployed minimum force necessary, to disperse the radicals.
