BERLIN — Ruling German Champion Bayern Munich is facing crunch time in the Bundesliga's 21st round in which Sunday's game against runner-up RB Leipzig comes like a final.

For the Bavarian league leaders, the crucial duel could open doors to a surprisingly successful season.

Despite a sloppy second-half performance in their latest Cup appearance, conceiving three goals against Hoffenheim, the German record champion seems on its way to not only win the 2020 German title but might turn into one of the surprises of this season's Champions League campaign.

Having scored 48 goals in 14 games under coach Hansi Flick makes Bayern Europe's most goal-hungry side. Since the team's last defeat on December 7 (2-1 to Moenchengladbach), Bayern scored at least three goals in seven of its eight games.

Having scored 58 goals at this stage of the national league is setting a new mark.

To some, it might appear like a bold consumption, but the US football-data online portal "FiveThirtyEight" has defined the 2013 Champions League as this season's campaign favourite.

Considering the goal scoring development, the portal is rating Bayern's chances (21 percent) ahead of those of the standard favourites Liverpool (20) and Manchester City (17).

Some might call the prediction a blooming mind game, but Bayern's group balance as a fact couldn't have been better.

The 18 points and a goal record of 24-5 out of six games, including a 7-1 against Tottenham and a 6-0 over Belgrade, seem to back the curious try to predict the 2020 Champions League winner.

Bayern is facing Premier League side, Chelsea, in the last-16-round of the Champions League.

In advance of the top-of-the-table clash, Bayern scored 16 goals in four games in 2020 while the side's top scorer Robert Lewandowski comes in on 5 in four, which increases his numbers to 35 this season in all competitions.

Former Liverpool and Bayern professional Dietmar Hamann is praising Bayern's game dominance.

"You can hardly rule games as they currently do," the 2005 Champions League winner commented.

The 46-year-old called Bayern's careless performance against Hoffenheim, "a warning shot at the right time," as it tells them only an entirely focused team is going to achieve success.

Hamann is convinced Bayern is aware that Leipzig's perspective has changed as "it might help them to again be in the role of the hunters" after having lost the league lead.

He said it is one of Bayern's qualities to make a realistic estimate of the situation. "They will be prepared to face Leipzig, knowing they might have struggled in the recent games but are still able to return to much better performance."

Next to Lewandowski, Bavarian idol Thomas Mueller, Thiago and Joshua Kimmich delivered outstanding performances. "We know we can get to some great things this season if we stay focused. We have shown this over the last weeks," Kimmich commented.

"It is now on us to prove that against Leipzig," the German international and former Leipzig professional added.
