Cologne, Wolfsburg reap vital points

BERLIN - Cologne reaped vital points in the relegation battle after beating Freiburg 4-0 and Daniel Ginczek's brace helped Wolfsburg to secure a 4-2 comeback win over bottom side Paderborn at the closer of the 20th round in Bundesliga on Sunday.

With the result, 14th placed Cologne increased the gap to the drop zone to six points meanwhile Freiburg stay on the 8th position of the table

Freiburg caught a promising start into the encounter as Manuel Gulde rattled the woodwork by header with only five minutes played.

Cologne needed some time to gain foothold into the game but once they were settled they broke the deadlock at the half hour mark when Sebastiaan Bornauw benefitted on a corner and tapped home the rebound from very close range.

Freiburg tried to respond before the break but Cologne goalkeeper Timo Horner was on guard to defuse Changhoon Kwon's volley on target. Gulde created another chance but missed the target from promising position in the 44th minute.

Cologne started highly motivated into the second half and caught the visitors flatfooted in the 55th minute when goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow blocked Mark Uth's shot into the path of Jhon Cordoba, who made no mistake to tap home from very close range.

Freiburg were unable to respond whereas Cologne added another two goals in the closing period as Kingsley Ehizibue made it three before Ismail Jakobs rounded off the 4-0 victory.

With the result, 14th placed Cologne increased the gap to the drop zone to six points meanwhile Freiburg stay on the 8th position of the table.

Elsewhere, Wolfsburg returned to winning ways after overpowering relegation threatened Paderborn 4-2.

Paderborn took the reins from the kick off and controlled possession whereas the "Wolves" kept all their men behind the ball and focussed on fast breaks.

The hosts produced the first chance of the game with 12 minutes played when Dennis Srbeny tested Koen Casteels from tight angle.

As the match progressed Wolfsburg grew in confidence but still Paderborn opened the scoring in the 22nd minute as Ben Zolinski poked home a flicked on corner at the second post.

Wolfsburg remained unimpressed and responded well four minutes later as Robin Knoche nodded home a free kick into the box.

Paderborn's game suffered another setback moments later after Gerrit Holtmann saw a straight rede card for violent conduct in the 34th minute.

The "Wolves" capitalized on their numerical advantage as Xaver Schlager's lay up allowed  Ginczek to slot home with a one timer into the near post corner with five minutes remaining in the first half.

After the restart, Paderborn grabbed a better start into the second half but for all that it were Wolfsburg who scored as Ginczek sealed his brace at the hour mark.

Ten-man Paderborn staged a courageous performance and reduced the arrears out of the blue as Sebastian Vasiliadis long-range effort overcame Wolfsburg custodian Casteels in the 72nd minute.

The "Wolves" had the last laugh and restored their two-goal lead four minutes later when Maximilian Arnold netted the 4-2 lead with a direct free-kick goal.

With the result, Wolfsburg jumped to the 9th place while newly promoted Paderborn slipped to the last place of the Bundesliga table.
