HONG KONG - A spokesperson for the Commissioner’s Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has strongly disapproved of and firmly opposed to some American politicians and institutions criticizing the Hong Kong police’s legal action against a district councilor suspected of violating the law.

By condoning and endorsing criminal acts without scruples and politicizing a judicial issue, the American politicians have only again exposed their entrenched ideological biases, double standards and insidious intent to mess up HK

In a statement issued on Saturday, the spokesperson said that the politicians have shown no regard for the law and facts at all, mentioning nothing about the suspect’s doxxing and incitement to violence and hatred, heaping groundless accusations instead upon the HKSAR government and police safeguarding law and justice, and trying to smear the central government’s Hong Kong policy.

"Their remarks have constituted a flagrant interference with Hong Kong’s rule of law and judicial independence," the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson highlighted that the rule of law is a core value of Hong Kong society.

"Everyone is equal before the law, and every effort is made to ensure laws are observed and strictly enforced and lawbreakers are prosecuted. No demand can ever justify crime, and no position can shield one from the law. By condoning and endorsing criminal acts without scruples and politicizing a judicial issue, the American politicians have only again exposed their entrenched ideological biases, double standards and insidious intent to mess up Hong Kong. But the international community has seen through their absurd logic and hypocrisy long ago, and their plots are doomed to be thwarted," the spokesperson said.

Human Rights Watch's unwarranted remarks condemned

In another statement issued by the office on the same day, a spokesperson firmly opposed and condemned unwarranted remarks by Human Rights Watch on Hong Kong police’s legal action against the district councilor.

The spokesperson's response came after the Human Rights Watch said local police's action against the councilor suspected of violating the law was “political persecution” and that the case should be immediately dropped.

The spokesperson said that Hong Kong is governed by the rule of law where no one is above the law, still less at liberty to knowingly break the law.

By openly condoning doxxing and incitement to violence and hatred under the pretext of human rights, Human Rights Watch has made a travesty of human rights, trampled the rule of law, and grossly interfered with the HKSAR’s judicial independence

"By openly condoning doxxing and incitement to violence and hatred under the pretext of human rights, Human Rights Watch has made a travesty of human rights, trampled the rule of law, and grossly interfered with the HKSAR’s judicial independence," the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson pointed out that Human Rights Watch has a track record for meddling with Hong Kong affairs and played a disgraceful role in the unrest last year.

"In total disregard of the facts and the law, it whitewashed the extremists’ outrageous violence as peaceful and rational demonstrations, and smeared the Hong Kong police’s restrained law enforcement efforts as excessive use of force. It even sent members to join the street rioters, cheered the latter on and acted as their accomplice by hampering the police’s performance of duty. Therefore, it should shoulder a good part of the blame for the rampant violence in Hong Kong," the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson emphasized that all Chinese people, including Hong Kong compatriots, will never allow Human Rights Watch and other anti-China organizations to run amok on China’s land, or to sow trouble by exploiting Hong Kong affairs.

"If Human Rights Watch insists on going further down the wrong path, it will find itself on the opposite side of the Chinese people, including our compatriots in Hong Kong," said the spokesperson.
