A spokesman for the Department of Health said it has contacted the Hospital Authority to obtain more information on the incident for investigation, adding that it was too early to determine whether the vaccination was related to the patient’s death

In a statement issued on Tuesday evening, a spokesman for the Department of Health said the 63-year-old man received the vaccination at Kwun Chung Sports Centre in Jordan district on Friday last week.

The man, who had chronic and respiratory diseases, developed shortness of breath on Sunday and sought medical treatment at Queen Elizabeth Hospital at around 1:30 am on that day, a spokesman for the hospital said in a separate release.

He was conscious when admitted and was preliminarily diagnosed with bronchitis by an accident and emergency doctor. He was transferred to the medical ward for further treatment at around 3 am, the hospital spokesman said.

However, the patient's condition deteriorated and received resuscitation performed by healthcare workers. He eventually succumbed at around 6 am, according to the hospital's release.

The health department spokesman said it has contacted the Hospital Authority to obtain more information on the incident for investigation, adding that it was too early to determine whether the vaccination was related to the patient’s death.

According to the established mechanism, the department will transfer the case to an expert panel on COVID-19 vaccination as soon as possible. Assessment results by the panel will be released in a timely manner, the department spokesman said.

The spokesman for Queen Elizabeth Hospital said the case has been referred to the coroner for follow-up.
