COVID-19 claims 6 more lives as HK sees 125 new infections

HONG KONG - The coronavirus claimed the lives of six more elderly patients as Hong Kong recorded 125 new infections on Saturday, the 11th day in a row with triple-digit increases.

All but one of the new cases were locally transmitted, including 45 with no known origin, health officials said in a press briefing.

The latest cases brought the city's infection tally to 3,397.

The Hospital Authority said the six COVID-19 patients who passed away on Saturday were aged 79 and 92. All of them had chronic diseases.

The latest deaths brought Hong Kong's coronavirus toll to 33.

The Hospital Authority’s COVID-19 community treatment facility at AsiaWorld-Expo started operation on Saturday, providing 500 beds.

Coronavirus patients aged between 18 and 60 and in stable condition will stay at the facility.

Nurses and doctors there will closely monitor patients and immediately send them to public hospitals if their condition worsens.

Tin Shui Wai Hospital Consultant (Accident & Emergency) Larry Lee said the first batch of around 20 to 30 patients will be moved in this weekend.

"We will try to increase the capacity at a later stage and we will review that," Lee said.

“The significance (of this facility) is that this is our first time to have (COVID-19) in-patient care services extended to the community and (it is) different from the community isolation facility in Lei Yue Mun. Actually, the scale, equipment and hardware there will be more like a hospital."
